Recognised sponsorship offers practical advantages such as faster processing of permit applications, less administrative burden, and higher success rates. What is a recognised sponsor and why is it becoming increasingly important?<\/h2>\n

A recognised sponsor<\/strong> is a company that has been officially recognised by the IND to apply for residence permits and\/or work permits for foreign employees. This status gives companies access to accelerated procedures and less administrative red tape when hiring international talent.<\/p>\n

Recognised sponsorship is becoming increasingly important due to the growing international labour market. The IND recognises companies as sponsors for various purposes: highly skilled migrants, researchers, exchange students, and au pairs. A separate application must be submitted for each category. Companies with multiple locations or departments must apply for a separate recognition for each location.<\/p>\n

The current international labour climate makes recognised sponsorship almost indispensable for companies that regularly hire foreign employees. The status demonstrates professionalism to potential employees and significantly facilitates the recruitment process.<\/p>\n

What benefits does recognised sponsorship offer employers?<\/h2>\n

Recognised sponsorship<\/strong> offers employers concrete benefits that accelerate and simplify the international recruitment process. The main advantages are faster processing, less paperwork, and improved employer branding for international talent acquisition.<\/p>\n

The IND aims to make decisions within 2 weeks for applications from recognised sponsors, compared to the standard processing time of 90 days. In some cases, processing can take up to 7 weeks when work permits are required, but this is still considerably faster than regular procedures.<\/p>\n

Administrative benefits include fewer documents required with applications and the ability to submit permit applications online via Portaal Zakelijk. This saves time and reduces the chance of errors in the application process.<\/p>\n

How long does the procedure to become a recognised sponsor take?<\/h2>\n

The procedure to become a recognised sponsor<\/strong> takes 8\u201312 weeks for established companies that have existed for more than 1.5 years. For younger businesses, the process can take up to 6 months due to additional assessments by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).<\/p>\n

Companies that have existed for more than 1.5 years go through a simplified procedure. The IND assesses these applications itself within the statutory decision period of 3 months, but aims for 8\u201312 weeks. These companies do not need to submit an extensive business plan or financial plan, other than the annual accounts from previous years, which must show positive liquidity and solvency.<\/p>\n

Companies that have existed for less than 1.5 years undergo an extensive assessment by the RVO. This process requires more documentation, including a detailed business plan and financial plan prepared by an independent accountant. The RVO uses a points system in which a minimum of 50 out of 100 points must be achieved.<\/p>\n

Factors that can speed up the procedure include an NFIA declaration for foreign companies establishing themselves in the Netherlands, or when the company results from a merger or acquisition in which the parties involved are already recognised sponsors. In these cases, the standard 4\u201312 week timeframe applies.<\/p>\n

The procedure can be delayed by incomplete applications, changes in the shareholder structure, or when additional investigation into the reliability of directors is required.<\/p>\n

Which companies are eligible for recognised sponsorship?<\/h2>\n

Companies eligible for recognised sponsorship<\/strong> must be registered with the Chamber of Commerce, be financially sound, and have reliable directors. The IND assesses continuity and solvency to ensure that the company can meet its obligations.<\/p>\n

General conditions apply to all companies: registration in the Dutch trade register (unless exempt), no bankruptcy or payment arrears, and compliance with relevant codes of conduct. Companies involved in temporary staffing must be registered with the Stichting Normering Arbeid (SNA).<\/p>\n

Additional criteria apply to established companies (older than 1.5 years): no arrears in social security contributions and payroll taxes, no tax penalties in recent years, and sufficient turnover and profitability. The IND may request a Certificate of Conduct for directors.<\/p>\n

Young companies must demonstrate their viability through the RVO points system. This assesses the business plan (maximum 40 points), organisational structure (20 points), and financial plan (40 points). A minimum of \u20ac50,000 in assets on the balance sheet is required to score points.<\/p>\n

Exceptions exist for subsidiaries of already recognised sponsors, companies arising from mergers between recognised sponsors, or acquisitions by recognised sponsors. These companies can follow the simplified procedure regardless of how long they have existed.<\/p>\n

Recognised sponsorship is mandatory for specific purposes such as highly skilled migrants, researchers under EU Directive 2016\/801, au pairs, and exchange students. For regular work permits it is optional but advantageous.<\/p>\n
