You need a recognized sponsor for specific IND procedures such as highly skilled migrant permits, au pair programs, exchange, study, and research. Recognized sponsorship is mandatory for certain residence purposes and optional for regular work permits. As an employer, recognized sponsorship offers advantages such as faster procedures and less documentation when submitting applications.

What is a recognized sponsor and why is this important?

A recognized sponsor is a company, school, or organization that has been officially recognized by the IND to submit applications for visas and residence permits on behalf of foreign employees. This recognition gives organizations the right to act as a sponsor for international workers who want to come to the Netherlands.

The recognized sponsorship system exists to ensure the continuity and reliability of employers. The IND wants assurance that organizations are financially sound and comply with all legal obligations before they can sponsor international workers. This protects both the employee and the Dutch immigration system against abuse.

Recognized sponsors are registered in the Public Register of Recognized Sponsors on the IND website. This provides transparency and helps international workers verify the legitimacy of their potential employer.

In which situations must your employer be a recognized sponsor?

Recognized sponsorship is mandatory for specific residence purposes: au pair programs, exchange, study, highly skilled migrants, and researchers under EU Directive 2016/801. For highly skilled migrants, an exception applies to persons with Turkish nationality due to bilateral agreements.

For other work permits, recognized sponsorship is optional but possible. This applies to regular employment, seasonal work, learning and working, intra-company transfers, and European Blue Card holders. In these cases, your employer can choose the standard procedure or recognized sponsorship.

The IND determines per residence purpose whether recognized sponsorship is required. If in doubt, you can check this on the IND website or contact a specialist in immigration law to determine which route applies to your specific situation.

What are the differences between recognized sponsorship and regular employer sponsorship?

The biggest difference lies in the processing time and documentation. Recognized sponsors receive priority at the IND with a target timeframe of 2 weeks for decisions, while standard procedures can often take months. In some cases, it can take up to 7 weeks when a work permit is required.

Recognized sponsors need to submit fewer supporting documents with each application because their reliability has already been established. They can also make use of the Portaal Zakelijk for online applications, which further simplifies the process.

For certain residence purposes you have no choice and recognized sponsorship is mandatory. In optional cases, you weigh the advantages of faster processing and less administration against the cost and effort of obtaining the recognition.

How does your employer become a recognized sponsor?

The application process consists of several steps and the processing time depends on how long your company has been in existence. Organizations that have been in existence for more than 1.5 years receive a decision within 8–12 weeks, while younger companies must wait up to 6 months due to more extensive assessment by the RVO.

The basic requirements are: registration with the Chamber of Commerce, no arrears with taxes and social contributions, reliable directors, and no bankruptcy in the past three years. For companies younger than 1.5 years, stricter requirements apply, such as a business plan and financial plan assessed according to a points system.

The costs amount to €4,866 for regular applications. Companies that have been in existence for less than 1.5 years or have fewer than 50 employees worldwide pay a reduced rate of €2,432. These amounts apply for the year 2025. After approval, the organization is included in the public register of recognized sponsors.

What are the benefits of working with a recognized sponsor?

For employees, a recognized sponsor means faster and more reliable procedures. Your application is treated with priority with a target timeframe of 2 weeks instead of months. This reduces uncertainty and shortens the time before you can start working in the Netherlands.

For employers, recognized sponsorship offers operational advantages: less documentation per application, online submission via Portaal Zakelijk, and no minimum or maximum number of annual applications. This makes attracting international talent more efficient and predictable.

Navigating the complexity of recognized sponsorship and IND procedures requires expertise in the constantly changing immigration legislation.
