To become a recognised sponsor, your company must meet specific requirements set by the IND regarding continuity, solvency, and reliability. You must be registered with the Chamber of Commerce, demonstrate financial stability, and comply with compliance requirements. The application procedure differs depending on how long your company has been in existence, with companies older than three years receiving faster processing.

What is recognised sponsorship and why is it important for companies?

Recognised sponsorship is a status granted by the IND to reliable organisations that want to bring international employees to the Netherlands. This recognition gives your company access to accelerated immigration procedures and reduced administrative burdens when applying for residence permits for foreign employees.

As a recognised sponsor, your company benefits from significant advantages when hiring international talent. The IND processes residence permit applications within two weeks instead of the standard processing time of several months. You need to submit fewer supporting documents and can submit applications digitally via the Portaal Zakelijk.

For knowledge migrants, au pairs, exchange students, and researchers, recognised sponsorship is mandatory. For regular employees, seasonal workers, and European Blue Card holders, the status is optional but advantageous. This recognition remains valid as long as your company meets all conditions, with no time limit.

What conditions must a company fulfil to become a recognised sponsor?

Your company must meet general conditions relating to registration, financial health, and reliability. First, your organisation must be registered in the Dutch trade register, unless you are exempt under the Trade Register Act 2007.

The financial requirements are crucial for approval. Your company must guarantee sufficient continuity and solvency. This means you must not be bankrupt, must not have a payment deferral, and must be able to demonstrate financial stability. The IND assesses these aspects thoroughly, especially for younger companies.

Reliability is another important condition. The organisation, directors, and other involved persons must be reliable. You must comply with applicable codes of conduct, and if you are involved in temporary staffing, you must be registered with the Stichting Naleving Arbeidsvoorwaarden (SNA).

For specific categories such as research, study, and exchange, additional conditions apply on top of these general requirements. These vary depending on the sector in which you operate.

How does the application procedure for recognised sponsorship work step by step?

The application procedure consists of several clear steps, and the processing time depends on how long your company has been in existence. Companies that have existed for more than three years receive faster processing, while younger companies undergo a more extensive assessment.

Start by checking the requirements on ind.nl to determine whether recognised sponsorship is mandatory for your situation. Then gather all the necessary documents, which vary depending on your specific circumstances and the age of your company.

Complete the application form, which you can download from ind.nl, and add all requested documents before sending the application to the IND. After receipt, you will receive payment instructions for the fees due, which you can find on the IND website.

The standard processing time is 90 days, but this can be extended in the case of incomplete applications or additional investigation. For companies younger than 1.5 years, the procedure can take up to six months because the RVO carries out an extensive assessment using a points system. After approval, you will be included in the Public Register of Recognised Sponsors.

What responsibilities and obligations does a recognised sponsor have?

As a recognised sponsor, you have ongoing obligations to maintain your status. You must continue to meet all conditions that applied at the time of your original application, including financial stability, reliability, and compliance with relevant regulations.

You are required to report changes in your organisation directly to the IND. This includes changes in the shareholder structure, acquisitions, suspension of payments, or bankruptcy. You must also report if you are no longer registered with the SNA when this applies to your business activities.

The IND recognised sponsor status also brings responsibilities with regard to the international employees you sponsor. You must ensure that their stay and work remain in accordance with the conditions of their permit.

In the event of a breach of conditions, the IND can revoke your recognition. This has direct consequences for ongoing and future applications for international employees. It is therefore important to proactively maintain communication with the IND about relevant developments in your organisation.
