Becoming a recognized sponsor with the IND means that your organization receives official recognition to bring foreign employees to the Netherlands. This comes with benefits such as faster permit procedures and less documentation. The application procedure takes an average of 90 days and requires you to meet conditions regarding reliability and financial stability. Below we answer the most important questions about this process.

What is a recognized sponsor with the IND and why would you want to become one?

A recognized sponsor is a company, school, or organization that has received official recognition from the IND to bring foreign employees to the Netherlands. This status offers significant advantages for organizations that regularly hire international staff.

The main benefits of becoming a recognized sponsor are faster permit procedures and reduced administrative burdens. As a recognized sponsor, the IND aims to process applications within 2 weeks, although some cases can take up to 7 weeks when a work permit is required. This is significantly faster than standard procedures.

In addition, as a recognized sponsor you need to submit fewer supporting documents with each application. You can also submit applications online via Portaal Zakelijk, which further simplifies the process. There is no minimum or maximum number of applications per year, allowing you to operate flexibly.

For companies that regularly hire highly skilled migrants, researchers, or exchange students, becoming a recognized sponsor is practically a necessity, as it is mandatory for certain residence purposes.

What conditions must you meet to become a recognized sponsor?

To become a recognized sponsor, your organization must meet both general conditions and specific criteria that depend on the age of your company. The IND primarily assesses your reliability and financial health.

The general conditions apply to all categories of recognized sponsorship. Your organization must be registered in the Dutch Trade Register, unless you are exempt under the Trade Register Act 2007. Continuity and solvency must be sufficiently guaranteed, and your organization must not be bankrupt or have been granted a suspension of payments.

Furthermore, the organization, directors, and other involved parties must be reliable. You must comply with applicable codes of conduct, and in the case of paid staff lending, you must be registered with the Stichting Naleving Arbeidsvoorwaarden (SNA).

For companies that have been in existence for less than 1.5 years, stricter requirements apply. These organizations undergo a more extensive assessment by the RVO (Netherlands Enterprise Agency) through a points system. You must score at least 50 out of 100 points, with aspects such as the business plan, organizational structure, financial plan, and balance sheet being evaluated.

How does the application procedure for recognized sponsor status work?

The application procedure consists of seven clear steps and takes an average of 90 days. For younger companies, this process can take up to 6 months due to the more extensive assessment by the RVO.

Start by checking the requirements on ind.nl to determine when recognized sponsorship is mandatory and which conditions apply. Then gather all required documents, which vary depending on your situation and the age of your company.

Complete the application form in full and download it from ind.nl. Add all requested documents before sending the application to the IND. Upon receipt of your application, you will receive payment instructions for the fees owed.

During the 90-day waiting period, the IND will assess your application. This period may be extended in the case of incomplete applications or when additional investigation is needed. After the decision, you can file an objection if your application is rejected. Upon approval, you will be registered in the Public Register of Recognized Sponsors on ind.nl.

For companies that have been in existence for less than 1.5 years, the RVO first carries out a preliminary check to verify whether you are registered with the KvK and whether there have been any changes in shareholder structure, takeovers, suspensions of payments, or bankruptcies.

What does it cost to become and remain a recognized sponsor?

The costs of becoming a recognized sponsor consist of a one-time application fee and any annual costs for maintaining the status. The exact amounts are set by the IND and are subject to change.

For the initial application, you pay application fees that vary by category (work, study, exchange, or research). Each category requires a separate application with associated costs. Organizations seeking recognition for multiple business units, locations, or faculties must submit a separate application for each unit.

Companies that have been in existence for less than 1.5 years will likely incur additional costs for the accountant for extra documentation, to be assessed by the RVO. This more extensive procedure involves higher costs due to the more intensive evaluation of the business plan, financial plan, and organizational structure.

After approval, there may be annual costs for maintaining your recognized sponsor status. These costs cover the internal administrative burden of maintaining records, important documents and dates, and any audits. The advantage is that there is no minimum or maximum number of applications per year, allowing you to spread the costs over your actual usage.

The investment often outweighs the benefits of faster procedures and reduced administrative burdens per individual application.

What obligations do you have as a recognized sponsor towards the IND?

As a recognized sponsor, you have various reporting and compliance obligations to maintain your status. These obligations ensure that you continue to meet the conditions under which your recognition was granted.

You must notify the IND in a timely manner of any changes in your organization. This applies in particular to changes in shareholder structure, takeovers, suspensions of payments, or bankruptcies. Changes in directors or other involved parties must also be reported, as this may affect the reliability assessment.

Compliance with applicable codes of conduct remains mandatory throughout your recognized sponsor status. For organizations engaged in paid staff lending, you must remain registered with the Stichting Naleving Arbeidsvoorwaarden and report any termination of this registration.

Your financial stability must be maintained. The IND can check at any time whether your continuity and solvency are still sufficiently guaranteed. If your financial position deteriorates, your recognized sponsor status may be revoked.

In the event of non-compliance with these obligations, the IND may decide to revoke your recognition. This has direct consequences for current and future applications from your international employees. The recognized sponsor status remains valid without a time limit, as long as you continue to meet all conditions.

Obtaining recognized sponsor status with the IND requires careful preparation and compliance with strict conditions, but offers significant advantages for organizations that regularly hire international employees. The investment in time and costs for the application process often outweighs the efficiency gains in subsequent procedures. At Eastwing, we assist companies with the complete application procedure and ensure that your organization meets all compliance requirements for recognized sponsor status.
