A recognized sponsor is a company that has received official recognition from the IND to bring foreign employees to the Netherlands. This status gives you access to accelerated procedures, reduced administrative burdens, and higher success rates for permit applications. Recognized sponsorship is mandatory for highly skilled migrants and researchers, but is also available for regular work permits. This guide answers the most important questions about obtaining and using this status.

What is a recognized sponsor and why is this important for employers?

A recognized sponsor is an organization that has been officially recognized by the IND as a trusted partner for bringing foreign employees to the Netherlands. This recognition means that your company meets strict requirements for continuity, solvency, and reliability.

For employers, this status is important because it opens the door to streamlined immigration procedures and permit applications. The IND has greater confidence in recognized sponsors, resulting in faster processing of permit applications and less extensive documentation requirements.

Recognized sponsorship is mandatory for hiring highly skilled migrants, au pairs, exchange students, and researchers under EU Directive 2016/801. For regular work permits, seasonal work, and European Blue Card holders, recognition is optional but advantageous.

Without recognized sponsorship, you cannot hire these specific categories of employees, which limits your international recruitment options. For companies that regularly want to attract international talent, this status is therefore practically indispensable.

What benefits does recognized sponsorship offer for hiring international employees?

Recognized sponsors enjoy significant procedural advantages at the IND. The processing time for permit applications is reduced to 2 weeks instead of the standard 90 days, although some cases can take up to 7 weeks when work permits are required.

You need to submit fewer supporting documents with each application, because the IND already has confidence in your company. This saves time and administrative burden for your HR department. In addition, you gain access to Portaal Zakelijk, which allows you to submit residence permit applications online.

Another advantage is flexibility: there is no minimum or maximum number of applications per year. Whether you hire one international employee or a hundred, the recognized sponsor status remains valid as long as you meet the conditions.

For international candidates, your recognized sponsor status also makes the process more attractive. They know that their permit application will be processed more quickly, which can be important when attracting top talent that has multiple options.

How do you become a recognized sponsor and what are the requirements?

The application process differs depending on how long your company has been in existence. Companies that have existed for more than 1.5 years go through a simpler procedure with a processing time of 8–12 weeks. You must be registered with the Chamber of Commerce, have no arrears with social contributions and payroll taxes, and have not received any tax penalties in recent years.

For companies that have existed for less than 1.5 years, the procedure takes up to 6 months. The RVO then assesses your continuity and solvency through a points system in which you must score at least 50 out of 100 points. You will need a comprehensive business plan, market analysis, and financial plan approved by an accountant.

General requirements for all companies are: registration in the Dutch trade register, sufficiently guaranteed continuity and solvency, no bankruptcy or payment deferral, reliable directors, and compliance with codes of conduct. For staff secondment, you must be registered with the Stichting Naleving Arbeidsvoorwaarden (SNA).

The application process consists of several steps: checking requirements, gathering documents, completing the application form, making payment, waiting for a decision, submitting an objection if necessary, and registration in the public register of recognized sponsors.

What is the difference between a recognized sponsor and a regular employer?

The biggest difference lies in the processing time and administrative burden. A regular work permit has a standard processing time of 5 weeks to 90 days, while recognized sponsors have their applications processed within 2 weeks. Regular employers must submit extensive documentation with each application.

In terms of costs, it varies by situation. Recognized sponsorship requires a one-time investment for the recognition itself, but can be cost-saving in the long term through more efficient processes. A regular employer has lower startup costs but higher ongoing administrative costs.

Another important difference is scope: with recognized sponsorship you can hire all categories of international employees, including highly skilled migrants. A regular employer permit is limited to regular work permits and excludes highly skilled migrants.

For companies that occasionally hire international employees, being a regular employer without recognized sponsorship may be sufficient. But if you regularly want to recruit international talent or want access to highly skilled migrants, recognized sponsorship is the better choice despite the higher initial investment.
