Recognized sponsor status is an official recognition by the IND that allows companies to submit expedited applications for visas and residence permits for international employees. This status offers employers benefits such as faster procedures (within 2 weeks), reduced documentation requirements, and online application options. To become a recognized sponsor, your company must meet specific conditions and obligations, which we explain below.

What does recognized sponsor status exactly entail?

Recognized sponsor status is an official recognition granted by the IND to reliable companies that regularly want to bring international employees to the Netherlands. As a recognized sponsor, you may submit applications on behalf of your employees for MVV visas, residence permits, EU Blue Cards, and ICT permits.

The IND assesses companies on continuity and solvency before granting this status. Your company must demonstrate that it is financially healthy, complies with all legal obligations, and is a reliable employer. This recognition applies to specific categories such as highly skilled migrants, researchers, exchange students, and au pairs.

Recognized sponsorship is mandatory for certain purposes such as highly skilled migrants and researchers under EU Directive 2016/801. For other categories such as regular employment, seasonal work, and intra-corporate transfers, it is optional but advantageous.

What benefits does recognized sponsor status offer employers?

Expedited procedures are the greatest benefit of recognized sponsor status. The IND aims to process applications within 2 weeks instead of the standard 90 days, although some cases may take up to 7 weeks when work permits are required.

You need to submit fewer supporting documents with each application because the IND has already screened your company. This saves time and administrative burden. In addition, you gain access to Portaal Zakelijk, which allows you to submit residence permit applications online.

There is no minimum or maximum number of applications per year, so you can use the status for both incidental and structural international recruitment. The increased success rates result from the IND placing greater trust in recognized sponsors, allowing applications to proceed more smoothly.

How do you obtain recognized sponsor status as an employer?

The application process differs depending on how long your company has been established. Companies older than 1.5 years go through a simpler procedure that takes 8–12 weeks. You must be registered with the Chamber of Commerce, have no arrears in social contributions and payroll taxes, and have reliable directors.

Companies younger than 1.5 years follow a more extensive procedure through the RVO that can take up to 6 months. The RVO assesses your company using a points system in which you must score at least 50 out of 100 points. Factors such as turnover, liquidity forecast, and continuity plans determine your score.

The application fee is €4,866 for established companies. Start-up companies (less than 1.5 years old) and small companies (fewer than 50 employees worldwide) pay a reduced fee of €2,432. These amounts apply in the year 2025. Foreign companies with NFIA support can go through an expedited procedure.

What are the obligations of a recognized sponsor?

You must comply with all applicable codes of conduct and keep your registration with the Chamber of Commerce up to date. Changes in your company structure, shareholder structure, or financial situation must be reported to the IND in a timely manner.

Reliability remains important throughout the entire sponsorship. You must not incur fiscal penalty assessments, must not commit violations of the Foreign Nationals Employment Act, and must pay your social contributions and payroll taxes on time. If you conduct staffing activities, you must remain registered with the Stichting Naleving Arbeidsvoorwaarden (SNA).

Obtaining and maintaining recognized sponsor status requires careful preparation and ongoing compliance with all obligations.
