A recognized sponsor is an organization that has been officially recognized by the IND to apply for residence permits on behalf of foreign employees. The difference from regular employer sponsorship lies in the accelerated procedures, reduced documentation requirements, and higher success rates that recognized sponsorship offers. Companies that regularly hire international employees can use this to significantly improve their immigration processes.

What is a recognized sponsor and how does it differ from other sponsors?

A recognized sponsor is a company, school, or organization that has been formally approved by the IND to submit applications for visas and residence permits on behalf of foreign employees. This status differs fundamentally from regular employer sponsorship in that recognized sponsors have undergone an extensive prior screening and are therefore granted more privileges.

With regular sponsorship, as an employer you must provide extensive documentation with every application to demonstrate your reliability and financial stability. As a recognized sponsor, you have already completed this screening once, meaning the IND trusts you and requests fewer documents for individual applications.

Recognized sponsorship applies to four categories: study, exchange, research, and work. For highly skilled migrants, researchers, and au pairs, a recognized sponsor is even mandatory. For regular labor migrants, seasonal work, and internal transfers, it is optional but advantageous.

Your responsibilities as a recognized sponsor go beyond those of a regular sponsor. You must actively report when a sponsored employee leaves their job, and you are required to notify the IND of any changes to employment conditions.

What benefits does recognized sponsorship offer employers?

Recognized sponsorship offers accelerated processing of applications, with the IND aiming for decisions within 2 weeks instead of the standard 90 days. For applications that require a work permit, this can extend to 7 weeks, but this is still significantly faster than standard procedures.

You need to submit fewer supporting documents with each application. Where regular sponsors must repeatedly demonstrate their financial situation and company details, recognized sponsors can provide basic information since their reliability has already been established.

A practical benefit is access to the Business Portal (Portaal Zakelijk), which allows you to submit residence permit applications online. This saves time and paperwork compared to the traditional postal procedure.

Recognized sponsors have no minimum or maximum number of applications per year. This means that both small companies that occasionally hire international staff and large organizations with continuous recruitment can benefit from the status.

The higher success rates arise because the IND regards recognized sponsors as trusted partners. Your applications receive less intensive scrutiny, which reduces the chance of rejection and makes the process more predictable for your recruitment planning.

How do you become a recognized sponsor and what are the requirements?

The process of becoming a recognized sponsor depends on how long your company has been in existence. Companies older than 1.5 years go through a simpler procedure that takes 8–12 weeks and costs €4,866 (€2,432 for companies younger than 1.5 years or with fewer than 50 employees worldwide). These amounts apply in the year 2025.

For established companies, the IND checks whether you are registered with the Chamber of Commerce, have no outstanding tax or social security arrears, and have not received any fines in recent years for tax offenses or violations of labor law. Directors must be reliable, which the IND verifies through declarations of conduct.

Companies younger than 1.5 years go through a more extensive procedure that can take up to 6 months. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) then assesses your continuity and solvency through a points system in which you must score at least 50 out of 100 points.

You must submit a comprehensive business plan (worth up to 40 points), describing your products, services, market analysis, and competitive position. The organizational structure and competencies of directors can yield up to 20 points.

The financial plan, prepared by an independent accountant, must include a balance sheet (at least €50,000 in assets), a revenue forecast, and a liquidity forecast for three years (together worth up to 40 points). Foreign companies can request a statement from the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA) to expedite the procedure.

When is recognized sponsorship worth it for your company?

Recognized sponsorship is particularly worthwhile if you regularly hire or plan to hire international employees. For incidental applications (1–2 per year), the costs and administrative burden may not outweigh the benefits.

For companies that hire 5 or more international employees per year, the time savings and higher success rates are usually worth the investment. The accelerated procedures help you bring in talent faster, which provides a competitive advantage in tight labor markets.

Companies with international growth ambitions or offices in multiple countries benefit additionally from recognized sponsorship. It not only facilitates recruitment but also demonstrates to external partners and candidates that you have experience with international mobility.

Consider your company size and HR capacity. Smaller companies without a dedicated HR department may find the compliance obligations challenging, while larger organizations tend to appreciate the administrative benefits and streamlined processes more.
